An overturned semi-truck in Tucson, Arizona, leaked noxious nitric acid, prompting officials to issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.
Video of the hazmat incident on the busy I-10 freeway caught by passing motorists Tuesday showed plumes of dark orange smoke emanating from the site of the crash.
An emergency alert text message concerning the shelter-in-place orders warned residents to “Turn off heaters, air conditioning units that bring in outside air.”
“Individuals within 1 mile radius should shelter in place,” the alert added.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety noted early Tuesday evening they were still working to contain the event.
Meanwhile, a Tucson Hazmat team was spotted at the scene.
The latest hazmat scare comes in the wake of a massive airborne toxic event caused by a train derailment, and subsequent controlled chemical release, in East Palestine, Ohio.
