Embattled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is likely to quit this week.

An anonymous source close to the Prime Minister told Reuters that Trudeau may announce today that he will resign as leader of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party after nearly a decade in power. If the announcement doesn’t come today, the source added, it is likely to come before Wednesday, when an emergency meeting of Liberal legislators is scheduled.

It’s unclear whether Trudeau would remain as Prime Minister until a new Liberal leader is chosen, or whether he would resign immediately.

It has been suggested Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc might step in as interim leader and prime minister.

An ever-greater number of Liberal politicians have urged Trudeau to resign, amid a deep slump in his popularity and the loss of a number of safe seats in special elections.

Trudeau had previously resisted calls to resign, but his situation worsened in December when he tried to demote one of his closest allies, Chrystia Freeland, for resisting his spending plans.

Polling now suggests Trudeau’s Liberal Party would win just six seats in an election and lose 154, while the Conservative Party would surge from 118 to 240.
