President Donald Trump has ended the program that allows billions of dollars in taxpayer money to be funneled into GAVI, the vaccine organization founded and funded by billionaire Bill Gates.
The cut to GAVI is part of the cancellation of more than 5,300 shady programs exposed during an audit of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The abuse of taxpayer funds exposed during the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) investigations into USAID was so rampant that the agency has now been shuttered.
Until the Trump administration ended the gravy train for Gates’ organization, American taxpayers have historically been among Gavi’s biggest donors.
U.S. federal funding contributes around 13% of GAVI’s annual budget.
The largest private donor to GAVI is the Gates Foundation.
One of GAVI’s main stated goals is to vaccinate half the world’s children.
The grant terminated by the Trump administration was worth $2.6 billion and was intended to last until 2030, the New York Times reported.
The decisions, first reported by the New York Times, were included in a spreadsheet sent to Congress on Monday night by USAID.
The document listed the projects that will continue – and those that won’t – after the expiry of Trump’s 90-day freeze on foreign aid.
The 281-page document reveals what little will be left of USAID, which has now been absorbed by the State Department.
In all, more than 5,300 programs are to be axed as part of Trump’s plan to eliminate the fraudulent abuse of tax dollars.
Also among the contacts getting cut is funding for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
FOA is one of the main sources for corporate media fearmongering about diseases like “bird flu.”
Confirming the decisions, the State Department, which now runs USAID, said:
“Each award terminated was reviewed individually for alignment with agency and administration priorities, and terminations were executed where Secretary [Marco] Rubio determined the award was inconsistent with the national interest or agency policy priorities.”
Only 898 of USAID’s awards will continue, according to the documents.
However, it remains unclear whether the Trump administration will actually be able to unilaterally cancel everything on the list.
Many of the Trump admin’s attempts to cut funds already allocated by Congress are currently facing challenges from radical activist judges.
According to an analysis by the health policy research group KFF, U.S. taxpayer contributions to GAVI have grown over the past 10 years from $175 million in fiscal year 2014 to $300 million in fiscal year 2024.
The $300M handout was the highest amount appropriated to GAVI to date.
But the loss of U.S. funding will likely be a significant setback for the organization.
In a statement, Gavi said U.S. support for its operations is “vital.”
“With U.S. support, we can save over 8 million lives over the next 5 years and give millions of children a better chance at a healthy, prosperous future,” the organization said in a statement on social platform X.
“For 25 years, the USA and Gavi have had the strongest of partnerships.
“Without its help, we could not have halved child mortality, saved 18 million lives or helped 19 countries transition from our support (some becoming donors themselves).
“We hope this partnership can continue.”
Bill Gates is now in “panic mode” after reports that Trump has cut funding for his GAVI initiative.
In response to the news, Gates issued a statement, saying:
“I am deeply disturbed by news reports that the U.S. Administration is considering withdrawing its support for Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization.
“If true, and if Congress allows this to happen, the impacts will be devastating, including the possibility of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of preventable deaths, especially among mothers and children.
“We are going to do everything possible to convince the Administration and the Congress to reverse these actions if true.”
