A black woman in Atlanta was arrested Thursday accused of attempting to start a fire at the site of civil rights icon Martin Luther King’s birth home.

Police arrested 26-year-old Laneisha Shantrice Henderson outside the national landmark in Georgia, where she was believed to be in the process of attempting to commit arson.

According to an Atlanta PD police report, “Officers detained a 26-year-old female suspect who had been stopped by multiple citizens. Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect had poured gasoline onto the property of 501 Auburn Ave. NE.”

Ahead of her arrest, two tourists from Utah filmed Henderson as she threw gas on MLK’s birth home before they tackled and detained her.

“That action saved an important part of American history tonight,” declared Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.

Atlanta Fire Department Battalion Chief Jerry DeBerry echoed similar sentiments, pointing out, “It could have been a matter of seconds before the house was engulfed in flames.”

Police charged Henderson with Criminal Attempt Arson in the Second Degree and Interference with Government Property.

Atlanta PD is also coordinating with the FBI and ATF to determine if any additional federal charges will be brought against Henderson since the home is designated federal property.

The King Center released a statement thanking the individuals who helped thwart the hate hoax.

“Tonight, an unfortunate incident occurred at the birth home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as an individual attempted to set fire to this historic property. Fortunately, the attempt was unsuccessful, thanks to the brave intervention of good Samaritans and the quick response of law enforcement. We thank the Atlanta Police Department, Atlanta Fire Department, the National Parks Service, and Mayor Andre Dickens for leading the efforts to ensure the safety of our cherished national landmark and its adjacent neighbors. Our prayers are with the individual who allegedly committed this criminal act.”

As of writing, it’s unclear what if any motive was behind Henderson’s alleged act.

Internet researchers uncovered Henderson appears to have served in the US Navy.
