A New Jersey police officer ran over a woman lying on the beach, sending her to the hospital with serious injuries.

Witnesses said the police vehicle was driving on the beach and struck the woman.

The incident occurred in Wildwood, New Jersey.

“Everybody was gathering around screaming, yelling at the person in the truck, ‘Stop! There’s somebody under your truck! You hit somebody!’” said Rose Simone of Chalfont, Pa,” 6 ABC reports.

The woman is expected to survive but has extensive injuries, including broken ribs and vertebrae, and a lung injury.

NJ.com reports:

Many bystanders gathered around the truck, some digging in the sand and others working to lift the front end of the full-sized pickup truck off of her, Simone said.

“They were the ones who sprung to action,” she said.

First responders placed her on a backboard and into the back of a rescue vehicle that transported her across the beach to a waiting ambulance, Simone said. Investigators remained on scene for roughly an hour, she estimated, taking photos.

On Friday, Wildwood Police Chief Joseph Murphy told the Press of Atlantic City the officer is normally assigned to the beach and the vehicle was the department’s Ford F-150. The chief did not identify the officer or the victim, but told the Press the incident would be investigated by Wildwood Police internal affairs and the accident reconstruction officer.

Per 6 ABC:

No details have been released by police about what led up to this incident – or who was behind the wheel.

Photos and videos from the scene show people gathered around a white pickup truck, marked Wildwood Police, and it appears they’re trying to help someone under the front of the vehicle.

“There’s someone under there,” a woman can be heard saying in the video provided by Simone.

“A bunch of guys came around that were in the area and they said we have to lift the truck, the front of the truck to get her out,” said Simone.

“Come over. We’re going to try to lift it up,” said one man in the video, referring to the truck.

“It was an accident clearly. But one that probably could have been avoided,” said Simone.
