A Florida sheriff praised a local resident who opened fired during a home invasion carried out by two ‘migrants,’ at least one of whom was in the U.S. illegally, according to authorities.
The harrowing incident unfolded at around 9 p.m. on Thursday night in Bradenton, a city in Manatee County.
A male homeowner reportedly observed two men breaking into his residence and urged his wife to seek refuge while retrieving a firearm.
The man subsequently shot at the suspects, striking one who later succumbed to his injuries.
The second suspect fled the scene but was quickly apprehended a short distance away.
He was identified as Michel Soto-Mella, a Chilean national who is illegally present in the U.S.

Manatee Sheriff Rick Wells explained that Soto-Mella entered the U.S. sometime this summer under a 90-day visa that expired in September and apparently never left.
Sheriff Wells says Soto-Mella arrived in the Tampa area last week and was allegedly staying a local hotel when he and accomplice, identified as Jorge Nestevan Flores-Toledo, 27, carried out the home invasion.
Flores-Toledo, who used the alias Anibal Miller-Valencia, was convicted and briefly incarcerated for burglary in Illinois last year before being released back to the streets.
“Anibal Miller-Valencia was arrested in Oak Brook, Illinois, in 2023, and served four months in jail for residential burglary before being released on parole in November of this year. He had an active warrant for parole violation and was considered armed and dangerous,” the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office explained a press release.
Soto-Mella has been charged with armed burglary but more charges could be brought against him.

“I praise this husband for doing what he needed to do to protect his home and protect his family. If you’re going to be that brazen to come into my home, you should expect that you’re going to be shot,” Sheriff Wells said.
